Europe proves completely useless in helping Italy to solve migrant crisis: Franco Frattini to RT International

Italy, along with France and Germany have agreed to draw up a 'code of conduct' for charities operating rescue boats in the Mediterranean with the aim of bringing under control the growing influx of migrants. In the past few days alone, up to 12 thousand people have arrived in Italy from Africa, while more than 85 thousand have landed in the country since the beginning of this year.

Former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini joins RT to discuss this issue. He expresses his deep concern about the current migrant crisis defining it unsustainable. Italy's extreme response to this lack of solidarity should be closing the italian ports to NGO boats except the official UN Missions.

Facts: An estimated 10,000 people are believed to have attempted the journey from North Africa in the past four days. More than 73,000 migrants have landed in Italy this year, an increase of 14% on the same period last year. The European Commissioner for Immigration, Dimitri Avramopoulos, met Italy's Mr Massari to discuss the crisis. "Italy is right that the situation is untenable," he said, adding that the country's management of the crisis was "exemplary". Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has accused other European nations of "looking the other way". (Source: BBC)
